Tweets in Context: I’m not dropping my last name when I get married

Updated: Oct 12, 2021

So hear me out. Two things: 1. My family is really small and 2. I’ve already built my reputation off my maiden name.

The patriarch of my namesake, my grandfather Elroy Muller passed away in June. He was diagnosed with dementia last year and had a quick decline. (More on my grandfather in another post.)

My grandfather was the oldest of his mother’s nine children and the only Muller. He went on to have three children: two boys and one girl. My dad, my uncle and my aunt.

Try to follow along here… My dad has four girls and one boy. My uncle has two girls and one boy and my aunt has two boys. That leaves two Muller men to carry on the legacy. However, my brother lives in Alabama, so he really has no ties to the Virgin Islands. Now, the other Muller man, my cousin, has two boys that are carrying his last name. This is good but they live stateside. There are no Muller men who live on island, but four of six Muller women do.

*what an exhausting family tree explanation*

I hope you’re still here with me.

With that being said, my dear last name of this family’s lineage is endangered.

Because of allll of this, I’ve decided I won’t be dropping my last name *fingers crossed* when I get married. Easy fix, I’ll drop my middle name, make my maiden name my new middle and proudly take my husband’s name. Non-negotiable, no boom.

Moving on…

I’m in my late 20s, I’m somewhat of a public figure so there’s a reputation and a career already built on my maiden name. Plus, my last name is associated with good work ethic, thanks to my grandma. Simply put, I want to preserve my last name. My husband will appreciate this. After all, he knew I was a big deal from jump 😉.
