2021: Year in Review

Updated: May 17, 2023

Highlights of 2021

Since we have just about 10 days left in the year, I figured I’d reflect on what the last twelve months have been like for me.

The first half of my year was rough but things have gotten a lot better in the last 6 months. In a nutshell, my therapist and best friends got me through a dark dark place earlier this year. Then, right after a pivotal milestone in my healing journey, God sent me my Russel Wilson (RW). Life just been smooth sailing since. So, moral of the story is go to therapy, keep solid friends in your circle, forgive yourself and trust the process.

Through all of the highs and lows of the year, I made a real effort to spend time with the people I love, love myself and my life and find peace in the space I’m in. In one word, my year was metamorphic. I still have work to do but as it stands, life is good.

Here are 10 highlights of my year:

1. Lue and Jed’s Wedding

In January, I was a bridesmaid in the wedding of my high school friends Lueandra and Jed. The weekend in Houston was a hearty reunion of friends and family to celebrate love. It was beautiful and I had a great time.

2. We Surprised My Grandma with a Brand New Car

My grandma is most frugal with herself but is a gives in abundance to her family. She is the backbone, cornerstone, rock—our everything! She’s been talking about this Hyundai Venue for over a year but all of her resources have been going into us and her home. Her kids, my aunt, uncle and dad, decided to buy her a brand new car because quite frankly, she deserves! It was a fuss to get her to lunch since she “had things to do” but the surprise had her in tears. Check out the video here.

3. I Bought Myself a New Car

So I pretty much was depressed and decided that I’d rather cry in a new Lexus than in my old Lexus, lol. I took a trip to Miami and made my big girl purchase. Retail therapy helps. F Sport babyyy 😎

4. My Grandfather Died

This was more of a lowlight, but I watched my grandfather gradually pass away this year. He’s my first close family member that has died and I'm still so sad about it. He was sick for a short period of time and my family took care of him in the months before he left us. My grandfather never missed an award ceremony, graduation or birthday. He was truly an active grandparent. His passing made me realize that as I am getting older and settled in adulthood, my parents and grandparents are aging—seemingly too fast. Time is truly limited. Now I’m anxious about how much time I have left with my other three grandparents 🥺

5. Became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc.

It’s been a longggg time coming. Quick backstory: The K’s at FMU were off the yard for a couple of years so I didn’t even have the opportunity to express my interest in undergrad. But every disappointment is a blessing because I got to cross with my best friend at my home chapter, sponsored by my former high school counselor. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I am a member of THEE Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Mu Gamma Omega chapter, SPR21--the 10 PearLS of Paradise! Skeee-weeee

6. My College Best Friend Visited Me in St. Croix!

My college experience in Miami was really the best because I had Ladarius! He's from Miami so that was a plus but, he’s one of the kindest, most creative, and thoughtful people I know. I was initiated on his birthday and afterward we spent the day touring the Big Island. He’s an Alpha so we're now locked in as real Phamily! I loved having him and he loved the island life same way.

7. Went on a Vacation

It was a vacation just to the BVI but either way, I was in another country and my phone was offff. I didn’t lift a finger to do any work. Iykyk, this is new for me. I was wined and dined and lived like a true tourist for 6 days.

8. Started a blog

Thanks for reading! I’m not sure where this will take me but I love to write so it’s really my little passion project. Check this entry out to read about it.

9. Did Something Adventurous

My friends and I went on a nighttime ATV ride on island. The evening ride was obviously a lot cooler and I can’t even imagine doing it in the hot sun. It was easily the most fun I had all year--all 90 minutes of it. I’m an adrenaline junkie so I had the best time, especially when we were mudding. 10/10 experience. I’ll definitely be doing it again. Shoutout to No Guts, No, Glory. Now I'm ready to bungee jump, zipline and sky dive, lol.

10. I Smiled, Laughed and Enjoyed the Company of Great Friends and Family
